According to legend, Pheidippides ran the first marathon from a battlefield to announce the defeat of the Persians. Although this undoubtedly required a lot of effort, he might baulk at the undertaking proposed by Andrew Cooper – Director of Music at All Saints’ Church Ryde.
On 9th March , Andrew will play every verse, of every hymn from the New English Hymnal. He estimates that all 500 hymns will take around 18 hours to complete and will involve playing nearly a million notes.
This superhuman musical effort is to provide funds for the All Saints’ musical outreach project for local school children. The children will have the opportunity to join a community choir with training being given by Michael Stevenson (former Head of Music of King’s College School) culminating in a school’s service in June.
Andrew will start his “hymnathon” at 06.00 and hopes to complete it by 20.00. The church will be open to the public throughout and all are welcome to come and listen.
During the day from 10 a.m. to 4.pm there will also be the inaugural All Saints’ “Paper Plane competition” – whose plane, built from a single piece of A4 piece of paper can fly the furthest down the church? Click for more details
